Applications Programmer

The Library, Information and Technology Services (LITS) Division at Mount Holyoke College is committed to providing information and technology services, resources, and leadership that enable students, faculty, and staff to creatively and productively advance the College’s academic, administrative, and co-curricular goals.

 

The Applications Programmer is a regular, full-time position reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, Systems, and Support, responsible for developing, enhancing, programming, testing, troubleshooting, debugging, implementing, and maintaining software applications on multiple platforms and web browsers, ensuring system interoperability, security, and standards compliance. Working in a team-based environment, the Applications Programmer collaborates with individuals and departments within LITS and throughout campus in achieving goals, and writes and maintains documentation.

Characteristic Duties and responsibilities:

1. Responsible for developing, enhancing, programming, testing , troubleshooting, debugging, implementing, and maintaining software applications on multiple platforms and web browsers, ensuring system interoperability, security, and standards compliance;

 

2. Writes and maintains technical documentation;

3. Maintains close partnership with Networking Team on the management of servers and software, including installing and testing new software, modules, and security components;

4. Works collaboratively to plan and achieve LITS Division goals and priorities, coordinating work with LITS staff as well as other College staff, faculty, and students;

5. Keeps abreast of new trends, tools, and opportunities. Assists the Director in identifying, planning, and implementing the best solutions for Mount Holyoke;

6. Ensures compliance with professional and technology standards, regulatory requirements, and MHC standards, policies, and procedures;

7. Maintains a high level of quality customer service standards in dealing with and responding to questions and problems;

8. Occasional evening and weekend work as necessary;

9. Performs other similarly related duties as assigned.

Qualification/Skills/Abilities:

1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required;

2. Web application development and support experience on various server platforms utilizing w3c web standards and familiarity with complex systems required;

3. Demonstrated experience writing secure, efficient code integrating various software stack components. Knowledge of PERL, JAVA, Apache, Tomcat, XML, Javascript/AJAX, CSS is required. Knowledge of PHP, Ruby, .NET and related technologies is desirable. UNIX and Oracle database experience is a plus;

4. Strong interest in learning and supporting new and varied software tools, programs, and technologies;

5. Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and problem-solving skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

6. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and work well with students, faculty, staff and others.

7. Ability to keep all business matters confidential and use tact and discretion in all interactions;

8. Creativity, with a passion for supporting a collaborative work environment;

9. Flexibility to accept, manage and incorporate change and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously;

10. A strong service orientation with sensitivity to the needs of users at all skill levels; the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience is essential;

11. The physical demands of the position include:

a. Visual ability to safely and effectively operate equipment, read computer screens, and printed materials;

b. Hearing and speaking abilities to effectively communicate through the telephone and in person.
