Network Administrator

The Network Administrator will lead or participate in multiple projects in accordance with institutional and departmental goals and priorities. Reporting to and working closely with the Network Manager in Computing and Information Services (CIS), he or she will assist with the design, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Vassar's data networks and related hardware. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: monitoring and troubleshooting wireless and wired networks; configuration of access layer switches and wireless access points; support for the physical network in conjunction with the Telecommunications team; monitoring data closet UPSs; completion of reports and summaries for CIS management, including status reports, problem reports, progress summaries, change management, and system utilization reports as needed; maintenance of system documentation; participation in network and information security monitoring, assessment, and response. • Three to five years of experience in networking, with progressive growth in responsibilities is required. Experience in a higher education or similar complex, multi-platform campus environment is preferred. Experience supervising other employees is desirable. • An Associate's degree (or higher) in Computer Information Systems, related fields, courses in network engineering, or acceptable equivalent experience is required. A bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems or related fields is preferred. • A strong knowledge of TCP/IP networks with experience using Cisco IOS including routers, switches, VLANs, and trunking is required. Experience with VPNs, wireless networks, and video teleconferencing is strongly desirable. Experience in a multi-platform environment running Linux/Unix, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems preferred. General scripting experience is a plus. • Knowledge of standards for wiring, data closets, copper and fiber installation, cable testing and certification is required. BICSI certification is desirable. • Certification as a CCNA or higher is desirable. Experience with Cisco PIX, ASA and MARS, firewall architectures, packet shaping, network access control, is a plus. An in-depth understanding of network security including system hardening, log analysis, intrusion detection, and vulnerability scanning is desirable. Experience with standard network security tools such as nessus, snort, nmap, tcpdump and protocol analysis is a plus. • Solid verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel and other productivity tools are required. • Must be able to work efficiently and cooperatively in a multitasking, collaborative team environment.
