Carleton College welcomes applicants for the position of Science Support Specialist. This is a two-year (September 15, 2008-September 14, 2010), temporary, exempt, benefit eligible staff position.
Purpose of this Position:
The Science Support Specialist provides support for the Science departments. The position supports general computer activities in Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and Geology and reports to Information Technology Services. Position is responsible for the support and maintenance of Macintosh, Windows and Linux hardware, software, peripherals, and instrumentation. S/he will assist the faculty and staff in the sciences to plan, coordinate, and install computer equipment; as well as work with ITS staff to maintain hardware and software inventories. The Science Support Specialist will report to the Director of Information Technology Services.
Responsibilities:
Install and repair hardware, software, instrumentation, and network printers with assistance from other ITS staff; server experience a plus.
Work with the faculty to develop, support and enhance the uses of information technologies in the curriculum and in research activities, where appropriate.
Early contact with new faculty about their information technology needs and the resources already available at Carleton.
Inform faculty about trends and new developments in technology. Investigate and respond to faculty technological needs.
Provide training for faculty, staff, and students in uses of technologies to improve teaching, learning and scholarship through a variety of media.
Work with ITS hardware and software managers to inventory all Carleton computing equipment and software in supported departments.
Be available to help faculty maintain and manage research computer equipment including instrumentation and some science lab computers.
Help science faculty and staff with computer applications for classes, labs, and comps.
Troubleshoot day to day computer problems in science labs.
Create clear and accurate written technical documentation.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
The ability to interact effectively with students, as well as faculty and staff is essential.
Solid experience with Macintosh, Windows, and Linux hardware and operating system, and software.
Knowledge of network protocols, Windows file server, print server and domain server technology.
Bachelor's degree in a science field or equivalent experience and a minimum of three years professional experience providing software/hardware support in a networked environment.
High level of organization and efficiency.
Ability to coordinate and complete projects with minimal
supervision.
Preferred:
Experience in academic environment preferred.
Experience with science instrumentation preferred.
