Systems Administrator

Vassar College announces a new position for a Systems Administrator in Computing and Information Services. This position will report to the Associate Director of Networks and Systems.

 

Responsibilities:

·       Maintain operating systems including Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, on multiple hardware platforms. Maintain and customize servers, applications, and enterprise infrastructure. Enhance and document systems and services, tune and configure applications and directories. Participate in information security projects.

·       The successful candidate will have proven hands-on technical proficiency and will be capable of resolving problems in all phases of systems management while working under minimal supervision.

·       Participate in the development of schedules, priorities, and determination of time lines and resources. Complete reports and summaries for management and/or users, including status reports, problem reports, progress summaries, change management, and system utilization reports as needed. Attend technical support committee meetings.

·       Participation in the development and implementation of proactive procedures and creation of documentation to keep systems operational and maintained. This includes log monitoring and system hardening as well as identifying and applying appropriate patches and system updates.

·       Lead and/or participate in multiple projects in accordance with institutional and departmental goals and priorities.

·       Three or more years experience in systems administration, including an extensive, current working knowledge of Linux/Unix or Windows 2003 Server/AD. Superior troubleshooting skills are required. Proven experience with other operating systems including Unix and Linux (preferably Red Hat Enterprise, Debian, and Fedora), Windows, and Mac OS X on a broad range of hardware platforms and in a complex, multiplatform networked environment is preferred.

·       Experience in system automation using languages such as Perl or Python is required.

·       A working knowledge of IP networking including standard internet protocols (including TCP, SMTP, SNMP, DHCP, and DNS), troubleshooting, and productivity tools is required. A working knowledge of directory applications including LDAP and Active Directory is desirable.

·       Experience with Citrix, Meeting Maker / People Cube is preferred. Familiarity with applications and tools such as Banner, Oracle, MySQL, Blackboard, Xythos, groupware, web based productivity applications, and open source solutions is desirable. Experience with backups, storage, SAN/NAS, virtualization, blade servers, RADIUS, email, and calendaring is desirable.

·       Experience with vendor relationships including software, hardware, and service contracts is desirable.
